There isn’t a best one I am afraid,.. You will have to shop around like the rest of us.
Best and cheapest insurance is to be put on your parents policy. Other wise at your age it will cost you an arm and a leg. Do a web search for insurance policies it will give you quotes from most companies.
I don’t know from where you may be writing, but in the US all that is required by law is liability insurance. Since you are a full-time student and under the age of 20-something, you can get on your parents insurance. I would suggest you try to do that because until you turn 25 and keep a clean record, your insurance is going to be high. Not your fault, just what they call risk management.
I would suggest rather than going through one of those online cheap places, talk to your parents insurance agent and maybe he/she can convince them its less expensive all around for you to get some decent full coverage and you just pay the difference.
There will be many answers to this question saying…go here or call this company. The reality is that there are hundreds of insurance carriers vying for your business…but here are the basics in California (you did not mention where you are).
Most likely being on your parents policy will yield the best rates for you. If you do not have that option here are the choices, if you have 1 ticket (point) or less in the last 3 years the major carriers usually have the best price, and more importantly, the best coverage. Major carriers are State Farm, AAA, Allstate (your current carrier), Farmers, GEICO, 21st Century, Mercury etc.
If you have some activity on your driving record an independent agent would be your best choice, however this is where it gets real tricky…there are as many bad independents as there are good…I wish I had a way to direct you towards a good one in particular, but it is IMPOSSIBLE to tell up front. Most of them will not quote you correct over the phone, because they want to give you the "lowest price"…however if the quote is incorrect…it may not be the lowest, and as a consumer, how can you tell? The sad thing is I am an independent agent, and have been for 17 years here in CA, the agents who are selling to the public usually don’t read the policies and even know the coverage limitations for what they are selling…I feel sorry for people shopping for coverage who have tickets right now. There are slimy agents out there…be aware and ask questions…if it sounds weird, call someone else, there are plenty of agents out there…good luck.
There is no cheap or affordable car insurance for 18-year-olds.
Any car insurance for an 18-year-old will cost you more than the 98 Nissan did.
It is just plain cheaper to get on your parent’s insurance than to go on your own. That’s your first step.
- Tell your parents you will pay for the increase from what their policy is now, to what it will be with you added.
- If you drive less than 2 hours a day combined, tell them and ask for a discount.
- Consider checking with a company like Progressive that will only charge you based on how much you drive and how safely. A device on your computer reports to the insurance company.
- If you use the last option it helps you drive safer (hopefully) and lowers the risk of insuring a young driver like you. If you always drive safely, then they have a higher confidence you are one of the small percentage of people your age who drive responsibly.
- If you are still in school, ask about a good grade discount.
- If your folks have a house insurance policy, check with the same company to see if you can get a multiple policy discount.
- Ask if there are any unnecessary coverages on your insurance and then (only if it is wise) remove them. For example, you may want to remove towing insurance (they tow your vehicle for you if you get in a wreck).
