Do car insurance companies know when you receive a moving violation?
When you ask for a new car insurance quote from your current or a new provider they always ask the question if you have been involved in an accident or have been pulled over recently etc, etc. My question is, do they already know this info and are they maybe testing me or do they really don’t know? I’ve had two moving violations within the past 5 years and I’m wondering how to answer these questions when I shop for insurance on a new vehicle.

if you have gotten a ticket or two or three, i would stay with the same company and not make too much noise. unless you get in an accident, the likelihood of the insruance company running your driving record is almost zero. they won’t know. if you try to go to another company – they will run your driving record – bank on it. and, the ticket(s) will show up and their quote will be higher as a result. Your current company does not know about it. Stay w them and don’t make any noise.

They can get the information if they feel it is worth checking on. They are mostly concerned with violations that lead to points being added to your license. At the time of the application they do not really know. They can check on it.

I moved from the West Coast to the East Coast, having had one ticket for speeding from 2 years earlier. I did the traffic court class thing at the time and didn’t think anything more of it. Well, it was in the computer of the insurance company when I went to change over my insurance even though I did the class!

The best thing to do is to be honest with them. They don’t already know that information, but they will almost certainly do a background check. They usually do a credit check, too. If they find out that you lied to them, they will raise your rates or even deny you coverage.

YES, they already know.(they ALWAYS check with the DMV and court records) The only ones that are hidden is when you do the traffic school thing, and then the citation is dropped (you have to make sure to do everything right) and doesn’t go on the record.
I recently had this conversation with an ins. provider:
Why are you charging more than the on-line quote I received?
The record shows an accident you didn’t tell us about.
I haven’t had any accidents in 25 years.
There’s an accident on your record.
OH! that was my daughter, not me. She’s on my policy.
Can you prove that?
If you have a record of it doesn’t the record ALSO say who was involved???
No sir, I’m sorry. You must provide proof.
Take your policy and shove it!! I’ll go elsewhere.
