How do I renew my proof of vehicle insurance if it is under my mother’s name?

I’m 19 and my mother pays for my insurance. I need to get new proof of insurance for my car and it’s past the expiration date for my auto insurance card. I need to do this on my own for complicated reasons and within the next three weeks before my court date. Are there fees involved? Do I need to go to the motor vehicle department? What do I need to bring with me? I’m freaking out right now and need to know EXACTLY what to do if anyone can help! Thx!

If mom hasn’t paid the renewal premium, you can always send a check for it or reinstatement; just ask mom for the bill or call her agent/company. When you get the new/renewal policy, you’ll get a new ID card; take that on the court date and you should be OK. If there was a lapse, though, you might still get a fine.

You obtain proof of insurance from the insurance company. Its name and address is on the expired insurance card.

If your mother already paid the insurance for the current date, then there is not an additional fee to obtain the card.

If your mother has not paid the insurance for any date after the old card expired, then the insurance must be paid before the new card can be issued.
