I want a new car, but i'm a student, so what is the cheapest affordable car I can get?

For low monthly payments and considering insurance and all.
I am looking for a pre-owned car something about 3 years old nothing over 50,000 miles.

A 2008 Scion xB is cool! 28MPG, standard iPod Connectivity, several safety features. I dont have enough time to go through all the pros here. The only con I can think of is the fact that its a new car and everyone will critisize ya for it (I have to go through that every time with my parents) with the insurance, and the statistics. I mean just because most teens get into accidents dosent mean you will get into accidents.

An answer depends on whether you want a brand new car, or are willing to get something used. I think that, for your dollar, a bottom-of-the-line new car isn’t halfway as smart of a buy as a two year old nicer car you could buy for the same money. You won’t be in a gutless, cramped car with no features. If you are willing to go with something used, buy something with low miles (I look for the 50,000 range or less). My other suggestion is to use the internet. Websites like cars.com let you find everything on local lots, and if you do an advanced search you can put in your exact search criteria. Make sure you read some reviews online and you should be able to get a great deal. Also do a Carfax so you can make sure it hasn’t been in accidents or had a bad history of repairs.

For used or new foreign cars, Hyundais and Kias seem to be inexpensive (make sure you read reviews though).

The domestic companies all have competitively priced new models, and for used, their prices generally drop faster.

If you mean "new" as in brand new – I would check out ‘program vehicles’ from the new car dealer. They are newer (usually current year) vehicles that have been used by rental agencies, or the manufacturers (Ford, Chevy etc.) zone managers. They have anywhere from 5,000 to 20,000 miles on them. I needed a second car for work, and bought a 2006 Ford Taurus (in 2006) with 13,000 miles, for $10,900. Same car, brand new was $21,500 sticker, which I got down to $17,800. I will never buy ‘brand new’ again.
Car was perfect, no dings, scratches or interior stains.
Plus it came with full warranty.
Cars that are very common, are usually less expensive because supply is heavy. Stay away from sports cars, and also foreign cars – which insurance costs are higher – because they cost more to repair if in accident.
    Good luck.

    It’ll really narrow it down.
