Will Health Insurance Reform give us affordable premiums?
We understand the proposed legislation will require insurance companies to
accept pre-existing conditions and prohibit them from dumping anyone who
gets an awful prognosis. These features are very progressive. Mr. Obama
didn’t want federally mandated insurance, but the insurance industry does
want it.
So if everyone is required to sign on, as with car insurance, then
we need to "shop around" for the best rates. What’s the bottom line?
How can we find out? Can we still ask our Congressional reps to
strike this out?

Yes, much of the reform is trying to regulate the rampant waste and inflated prices that insurance companies are passing onto us. No one is currently regulating how much these companies are inflating their prices. The excess that we are charged ends up lining the heath care executives’ pockets.
Additionally, If the public option is passed, it will bring down insurance premiums because there will be pricing competition for the inflated private insurance companies.

No, the CBO has stated that it will actually raise premiums. This bill will not solve any problems, nor reduce our costs. It’s there to take control, that is all.

It could. We’ll have to see what comes out of the process.

The current bill is a joke. Howard Dean is right.

Wait and see what the final bill has in it. It will likely have a mandate forcing everyone to buy insurance because that’s the only way to pay for the uninsured.
You will not be able to shop around. There will be a one-size-fits-all policy issued by or mandated by the govt. with all the things you don’t need (abortions, counseling, acupuncture, etc.).
And don’t ask your congressman to do anything. They are not listening or this would have been dead months ago.

A simple equation: Business + Regulation = Higher Prices
It costs money to comply with regulations. Businesses don’t "eat" the cost, they pass them onto consumers.
So, sitting at home rooting for more regulations for those "evil insurance companies" isn’t going to lower prices for you, and it certainly isn’t going to punish them in the way you want it to.
The politicians (to be fair, regulation is mostly born on the left side of the isle) who are trying to "look out for the little guy" by punishing the big guy are really just putting on a smoke and mirror show that hurts the little guy in the end.
